Designing Architecture Into the Garden

Every Project Begins With the Garden

Every project begins with the garden.

The position of the building, the movement of light, the views across planting, and the way people will use the space all guide the design. Rather than selecting a standard structure, each garden room is shaped through a design process that responds to its surroundings.

This approach allows the architecture to feel natural within the landscape. The building sits comfortably in its setting, doors open onto terraces, and glazing frames the garden beyond.

By starting with the garden and the experience of the space, the result becomes more than an additional room. It becomes a carefully designed place that improves how the home and garden are used every day.

Architecture, Not Boxes

Design Before Structure, Not a Catalogue of Buildings

Many garden rooms begin as products. Standard sizes. Fixed layouts. Predefined finishes. The result is often a structure that sits in the garden but never truly belongs there.

Our approach begins with architecture. Every project starts with the site, and the design is developed around:

  • Design developed around the site, not a catalogue
  • Proportion, balance and considered presence
  • Roof heights, overhangs and facade rhythm
  • Glazing positioned to frame the garden
  • Layouts shaped by how the room will be used
  • Materials selected for durability and appearance
  • Structure, cladding and glazing resolved in detail
  • Landscape connections designed from the start
  • Buildings that feel permanent, not temporary

Our Approach

Architecture Into the Garden.

Human Experience

Good architecture begins with people.

Before we consider structure or materials, we consider how the space will feel to use. Some rooms are designed for focused work and quiet thinking, others for creativity, movement or gathering. The building grows around the experience of the people using it.

Landscape

Every garden has its own character.

The shape of the space, the direction of sunlight, existing planting and surrounding buildings all influence the design. Windows and doors are positioned to frame the most interesting parts of the garden, so the landscape becomes part of the room.

Materials

Chosen to age well, not simply to last.

We select materials for durability, performance and how they mature over time. Timber softens in tone, metal develops character, and glass maintains a strong connection to the landscape as the garden evolves.

MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION

Engineered for year-round comfort

The structure of a garden room defines how it performs for decades. Strength, insulation and stability all begin with the way the building is constructed.

Our approach combines traditional timber frame construction with modern Structural Insulated Panel technology, creating buildings that are strong, energy efficient and capable of supporting larger architectural openings.

INTO STRUCTURE

Timber Frame and Structural Approach

Timber frame construction has been used in architecture for centuries. Structural studs, beams and roof members create the framework that supports the roof, walls and glazing, keeping the structure lightweight while providing excellent strength and stability. Timber is also renewable and stores carbon while offering good natural thermal properties.

For larger buildings and projects that require building control approval, we often introduce Structural Insulated Panels. SIPs are engineered panels made from a rigid insulation core bonded between structural boards, forming insulated structural walls and roofs that combine strength and insulation in a single system. Used alongside timber frame construction they allow larger spans, wider glazing openings and buildings designed for year round use.

SIP panels are manufactured in large sections, so they cannot always be used in every garden. Many urban gardens, particularly in London, have restricted access through narrow side paths or tight entrances. Where access is limited we use traditional timber frame construction with layered insulation systems, achieving strong structural integrity and excellent thermal performance while building in smaller components.

INTO THERMAL COMFORT

Insulation and Thermal Performance

Thermal performance begins with the building envelope. Walls, roof and floor are designed as layered construction systems that control heat loss, moisture movement and air leakage, typically combining a structural framework, high performance insulation, breathable membranes, vapour control layers and external cladding.

Heat naturally rises, so roof structures include deep insulation with vapour control systems, and insulated floor systems reduce cold bridging from the ground. Large areas of glazing use thermally broken aluminium frames with double or triple glazing, argon filled units and low emissivity coatings, so the room stays bright and open without compromising energy performance.

Where SIP construction is used, insulation sits directly within the structural panel, minimising thermal bridging. Where access prevents this, layered insulation within the timber frame achieves comparable performance.

Breather membrane and cladding build up

INTO WEATHER PROTECTION

Weatherproofing, Airflow and Longevity

Weather protection comes from a carefully designed construction system rather than a single surface layer. Walls and roofs are built using external cladding, ventilated cavities, breathable membranes, structural sheathing and insulated framing, so water is kept out while moisture vapour escapes safely from the structure.

Behind the cladding, ventilated cavities allow air to circulate around the outer structure. Ventilation gaps at the top and bottom of the facade let air move freely, helping the building dry naturally after rainfall or humidity. Roof systems use high performance waterproof membranes with subtle falls that direct rainwater to outlets, preventing standing water.

Timber elements are selected for stability and weather resistance, and aluminium glazing systems provide corrosion resistance and structural reliability. Roof water is directed through integrated drainage while surrounding landscaping moves surface water safely away from the foundations.

Ground screw foundation and floor structure

INTO GROUNDWORKS

Foundations and Groundworks

Ground screw foundations are often the preferred solution. Steel screws are driven directly into the ground using specialist equipment and the structural frame is fixed to the head of each screw, requiring very little excavation and preserving the surrounding soil structure.

Because ground screws sit between root systems rather than cutting through them, they are often the most appropriate solution near mature trees, and especially valuable where Tree Preservation Orders, Root Protection Areas or conservation area conditions apply. They also perform well where garden access is limited, and can be installed at different depths to create a perfectly level base on sloping ground.

In some situations a reinforced concrete foundation is required, typically for larger buildings, projects requiring building control compliance, or where ground conditions demand additional structural support. Concrete needs excavation, shuttering and curing time, so it suits gardens with good access and space for equipment.

Structural warranty and roofing guarantee

INTO DURABILITY

Durability and Warranty

Every garden room is protected by a 10 year structural warranty covering faults caused by defects in materials or workmanship. This protects the main structure of the building and remains valid provided that normal maintenance is carried out.

EPDM rubber roofing systems include a 20 year manufacturer guarantee and have an expected lifespan of up to 50 years when maintained correctly. Aluminium bifold door systems are supplied with a 10 year manufacturer warranty covering the paint finish, locking mechanisms and moving parts.

Projects are delivered by experienced tradespeople working closely with our design and project management team, and we actively seek client feedback so we can keep improving the way we design, build and deliver every project.

Sustainability

Responsible Design and Construction

Sustainability is built into the way we design and construct our garden rooms. A garden room adds living space without extending the footprint of the main house, which reflects a central principle of our studio: living better, not building bigger.

Timber is renewable, naturally insulating and stores carbon throughout its lifespan, and where possible timber products are sourced from responsibly managed forests. Insulated wall systems, high performance glazing and carefully detailed roof and floor construction reduce heat loss, so the building needs less energy through the year.

Where possible we use ground screw foundations, which require minimal excavation and reduce disruption to soil and planting. Longevity matters most of all. Buildings that last longer require fewer resources over time.

Materials

The Materials We Specify, and Why

We specify materials for durability, performance and the way they age within a garden. Every element of the building envelope is selected to perform reliably in the British climate.

Timber Frame

A renewable structural system with low embodied carbon, lightweight but strong and highly adaptable to bespoke layouts.

SIP Panels

Rigid insulation bonded between structural boards, giving greater rigidity, wider spans and integrated thermal performance.

Timber Cladding

Thermally modified timber, cedar and charred timber, installed over ventilated cavities so the facade breathes and ages naturally.

Aluminium & Glazing

Slim, thermally broken frames with double or triple glazing, argon filled units and low emissivity coatings.

EPDM Roofing

High performance rubber membranes with a 20 year manufacturer guarantee and an expected lifespan of up to 50 years.

Ground Screws

Low impact steel foundations that sit between root systems, suit sloping ground and work well where access is restricted.

Material choices adapt to each site. Architectural intent remains constant.

Technical Performance

Insulation, Airtightness and Thermal Detail

A garden room designed for year-round use needs more than a single layer of insulation. Walls, roof, floor, glazing and structural connections are designed to work together as one building envelope.

Wall Insulation

Integrated within SIP panels or layered within the timber frame

Roof Insulation

Deep insulation with vapour control layers above the ceiling

Floor Insulation

Insulated floor systems that prevent cold bridging from the ground

Glazing Performance

Thermally broken frames with argon filled, low emissivity glass

Airtightness

Membranes and precise detailing that control air movement

Thermal Bridging

Structural junctions designed to minimise heat transfer

Ventilated Cavities

Airflow behind cladding so the structure dries naturally

Water & Drainage

Integrated roof drainage and landscaping that moves water away

Warranty

Backed by Long Term Guarantees

Every garden room is protected by warranties covering the core construction of the building:

  • 10 year structural warranty on materials and workmanship
  • 20 year manufacturer guarantee on EPDM roofing
  • Expected roof lifespan of up to 50 years
  • 10 year warranty on aluminium bifold doors
  • Cover for paint finishes, locks and moving parts
  • High performance glazing units built for reliability
  • Projects delivered by experienced tradespeople

Warranties remain valid provided that normal maintenance is carried out. Natural timber cladding varies in tone and changes in appearance over time, which is a natural part of timber architecture.
